Tripura Congress Opposes Labour Code, Accuses BJP of Anti-Worker Policies

Date:

Agartala, 11th  May 2026: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee has strongly opposed the Centre’s new Labour Code, calling it anti-worker and harmful to labourers, farmers, and unemployed youth across India.

Speaking to the media, party spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty accused the Central Government of favouring wealthy elites while leaving the majority of citizens facing economic uncertainty and growing dependence on state support. He also criticised the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that their policies are widening inequality.

He claimed that the Labour Code rules were brought into force on May 8, 2026, after elections in five states were completed. According to him, while the Labour Code laws were passed in 2019–20 and officially notified on December 21, 2025, the government delayed releasing draft rules due to electoral considerations in Bihar.

Chakraborty further argued that the new provisions dilute worker protections by weakening wage safeguards, making retrenchment easier in companies with fewer than 300 employees, and giving employers more flexibility in matters of compensation and workplace safety. He also alleged that certain restrictive elements similar to provisions in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been embedded in the labour framework, which he said could curb labour movements.

Calling the legislation a “black law,” he said the Congress would continue to demand its repeal in the interest of workers across the country.

The party also urged the Tripura government to intervene using its constitutional powers under the Concurrent List to modify the Labour Code locally and protect workers’ rights.

On the state’s economic situation, he claimed unemployment and financial stress are rising due to limited government recruitment and what he described as anti-people policies from the Centre. He also referred to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, alleging that workers in Tripura received only about 40 days of work in the past month.

The Congress concluded by demanding complete withdrawal of the Labour Code and urged immediate steps from the state government to safeguard workers and common citizens.
