Tripura generates least plastic waste in country: Prez Murmu

Agartala: October 12. The President of India Droupadi Murmu today has said that Tripura was on the top place in achieving the target of ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’, included in the Sustainable Development Goal –12 during the year 2020-21 and also said that the state is one of the two states that generate the least plastic waste.

The President Murmu said this while attending a civic reception hosted by the Agartala Municipal Corporation at Agartala Town Hall this evening.Speaking on the occasion, the President thanked the people of the state for their warm welcome. She said that the composite culture of Tripura is the pride of India. The tribal community of Tripura has maintained a beautiful amalgamation of democracy and tradition.

“Living in harmony with nature is the specialty of tribal society. Most of the area of Tripura is rich in forest resources. In preserving this invaluable forest wealth, the natural lifestyle of the tribal society has played an important role”, she said.

She was happy to note that Tripura was on the top place in achieving the target of ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’, included in the Sustainable Development Goal –12 during the year 2020-21She also noted that Tripura is one of the two states that generate the least plastic waste.The President noted that Tripura is a power-surplus state and it exports electricity to Bangladesh.

“The connectivity between Bangladesh and India has increased with the construction of ‘Maitri Setu’ over Feni River. At the same time, it has become convenient for the entrepreneurs of Tripura to use the ports of Chittagong and Ashuganj. It can be said that, from the very beginning, Tripura has played a major role in deepening India’s friendship with Bangladesh”, she said.

She also expressed her happiness that Tripura is making steady progress as an educational hub.Earlier, the President visited Albert Ekka War Memorial in Agartala and paid homage to brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war.Later, DyCM Jishnu Dev Varma said, “Today is historic day in Tripura as President is present in our state. Our state is a small state but have a glorious history. Guru Rabindranath Tagore came seventh times and had written many books. Our Municipality has crossed more than 150 years. For urban development our government has worked for the betterment of the people. We feel proud that one indigenous has become our president”.

While Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said, “The president has inaugurated a series of programme starting from laying of foundation stone of Law university. Tomorrow she will flag off two special trains at Agartala Railway station. I have met Union Railway minister where I have demanded for these trains. I want to tell President that for the development of indigenous the state government has taken a series of decisions including changing name from Tribal welfare department into Janajati Kalyan Department”.

During the programme AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder, Urban development minister Manoj Kanti Deb and other MLAs were present.
