Tripura government targets completion of new jail by December: Minister Tinku Roy

Date:

Agartala,  31st July 2026: Tripura’s Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy on Friday reviewed the progress of the under-construction new jail and directed officials to ensure that the project is completed by December 24 this year.

Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Roy clarified that the visit was to the site of the new jail under construction, where senior prison officials, including the Inspector General (IG) of Prisons, were present.

“The construction of the new jail is progressing. We reviewed what more can be done to improve the work and ensure its early completion. Officials from the executing agency, PWD and other departments were present during the inspection. They have assured us that the project will be completed by December this year,” the minister said.

He added that once the new facility is ready, the existing jail will be shifted to the new premises.

During the visit, Roy also inspected the old jail and pointed out several maintenance issues, including repairs to the boundary wall and other infrastructure.

“I have shown the officials the repair works that need immediate attention in the existing jail. They have committed to completing those works at the earliest,” he said.

When asked about the future of the old jail premises after the prison is relocated, Roy said no final decision has been taken yet.

“We will examine the future plans. Since open space is limited within the city, this is an important location. We will hold discussions with local residents, understand their requirements and then take an appropriate decision regarding the future use of the land,” the minister added.

The review reflects the government’s focus on strengthening prison infrastructure while also planning for the productive utilisation of valuable urban land after the relocation of the existing jail.
