Tripura Human Rights Commission Initiates Inquiry into Alleged Ragging at School Hostel

Date:

BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 2nd December 2025 :  The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken notice of reports alleging prolonged ragging at the boys’ hostel of Anandanagar Dr. B.R. Ambedkar English Medium School in West Tripura District. The Commission has directed the Director of School Education, Government of Tripura, to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit a report within one month.

The order, signed by Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh, noted that the hostel, which accommodated around 100 students two years ago, now houses only 22 students. Reports suggest that several parents have withdrawn their children following claims of repeated ragging over the past year.

According to the order, the guardian of a Class-VII student recently removed their son after allegations of physical abuse and harassment surfaced. The student and his mother reportedly raised concerns about the conduct of hostel authorities, particularly the Hostel Superintendent, Rajesh Debbarma. It is alleged that senior students from Class-XI and Class-XII frequently demanded money from younger students, including 600 rupees from the Class-VII student, and subjected them to physical punishment if the demands were not met. A similar incident was reportedly reported six months earlier.

In the latest reported incident, the student allegedly used a security guard’s mobile phone to contact his guardian, claiming he was being denied food and physically tortured. The mother reportedly rushed to the school upon learning of the situation.

Hostel Superintendent Rajesh Debbarma, however, denied the allegations, stating that there had only been a dispute with a Class-XII student, which had been resolved.

The THRC has instructed the Director of School Education to investigate the matter thoroughly and submit a detailed report within a month. The case is scheduled for further hearing on January 8, 2026.
