Agartala, 4th July 2025: Thousands of irregular employees rallied under the banner of the Tripura Irregular Employees Forum today converging in Agartala as part of a statewide Mahakaran Abhiyan to press for a long-standing 8-point charter of demands.
The mobilization aimed at securing justice for approximately 40,000 irregular staff culminated in an attempted deputation to the Chief Secretary, which was met with a heavy police barricade near Circuit House here.
The procession began from the Agartala Press Club, coursed through several routes before it was halted by police and TSR personnel near Circuit House here. Police had erected a heavy barricade in anticipation of the rally, effectively preventing the Forum members from advancing further.
Despite this, protestors from multiple district branches of the Tripura Irregular Employees Mancha raised slogans asserting their demands, which include equal pay for equal work, regularization of services and financial compensation for retired and deceased employees.
“When the BJP came to power in 2018, they assured us that irregular employees would be regularized. That promise has yet to be fulfilled. Today’s Abhiyan is a reminder that these 40,000 employees will not be ignored,” stated advocate Purushottam Roy Barman, who lent support to the march.
He further noted that among the key demands were: Regularization of all irregular employees; Rs Equal pay for equal work post-regularization; Rs 10 lakh as a one-time settlement for those already retired; Rs 10 lakh compensation for families of deceased irregular staff; and many more.
Forum members were scheduled to submit their deputation to the Chief Secretary after 4 PM. At the time of filing this report, the handover was expected to proceed later in the evening.
