Agartala, 4th July 2025 : In a shocking case of alleged medical malpractice and fraud, a poor farmer from Banshpukur has accused a renowned doctor in Agartala of embezzling more than Rs 1.5 lakh under the pretext of performing a bogus operation on his young son.

Mamun Mia, 35, a marginal farmer supporting a family of four through agriculture, filed a formal complaint with the Jatrapur police station against Dr. Ajay Saha, a well-known physician practicing in Ganaraj Chowmuhani, Agartala. The complaint alleges that the doctor misled the family into believing their 9-and-a-half-year-old son required surgery following a minor leg injury.

According to Mamun Mia, the incident began on March 20th when his son, a student of Class IV, suffered a cut on his right leg while playing. After a week of home care and local consultations, Mamun brought his son to Agartala on March 27th. At Dr. Saha’s private chamber, the doctor recommended immediate hospitalization and surgery.

“Trusting the doctor, we sold off rice, cattle, and other household items to arrange the amount he demanded,” Mamun told this reporter. “He said the operation was successful, and we took our son home. But 15 days later, the wound worsened.”

When the desperate parents returned to Dr. Saha, they were again advised to undergo another surgery. Losing faith in the treatment, the family travelled to Guwahati and admitted the boy to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMC). To their astonishment, doctors at GMC removed a thorn from the leg, a procedure that cost them barely a fraction of what they had already paid.

“Our son is now doing much better,” Mamun said. “The operation at GMC didn’t even cost much – just some travel fare and medicines.”

The case has raised serious concerns about unethical practices and exploitation of vulnerable patients in rural areas. “How could a small thorn lead to a Rs 1.5 lakh treatment plan?” Mamun asked. “I want my money back. We trusted him. But he took advantage of our desperation.”

The Jatrapur police have acknowledged receiving the complaint and stated that an investigation is underway. The medical fraternity, meanwhile, is expected to come under intense scrutiny as the case unfolds.
