Agartala, 16th December 2024: The Tripura Khet Mazdoor Union organized a two-hour mass sit-in-demonstration at Paradise Chowmuhani here on Monday, pressing for five key demands including 200 days of work per year under the REGA and TUEP projects and a daily wage of Rs 600. The union has warned of a larger movement if their demands are not promptly addressed.
An activist from the organization highlighted the government’s failure to support flood victims adequately. “The state government has not stood by the victims of the terrible floods. They are deprived of necessary financial assistance,” the activist said. He also criticized the insufficient funds allocated for housing construction under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana project. “The amount provided is too little to build a house,” he added.
The union’s five demands include: 200 days of work per year in MGNREGA and TUEP projects, a daily wage of Rs 600, provision of land settlement for all landless and homeless people, an end to social oppression of indigenous women and other related demands.
The protest highlighted the urgency of these issues and called for immediate government intervention. The participants vowed to escalate their efforts if their demands are not met soon, emphasizing the need for prompt and effective solutions to the challenges faced by the workers.
