Tripura launches first livestock insurance scheme, 85% premium subsidized: Sudhangshu Das

Date:

Agartala, 31st July 2026 : Tripura has launched its first livestock insurance scheme to protect farmers and livestock rearers from financial losses caused by accidental deaths and diseases of animals.

Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das, in a social media message on Friday, said the scheme has been introduced jointly under the Government of India’s National Livestock Mission and the state Department of Animal Resources Development.

The insurance covers cows, goats, pigs, buffaloes and sheep. The government will bear 85 per cent of the insurance premium, while beneficiaries will pay the remaining 15 per cent.

Explaining the benefits, Das said under the one-year policy, a premium of ₹25 provides insurance coverage of ₹5,000, ₹51 provides ₹10,000 and ₹76 provides ₹15,000. A premium of ₹254 can provide coverage of up to ₹50,000. Two-year and three-year policies are also available with proportionate premium and coverage options.

The Minister said the initiative is aimed at reducing the financial burden on livestock rearers while encouraging higher production of milk, meat and eggs. It is also expected to strengthen the rural economy, create employment and improve the availability of protein-rich food.

Poultry has not been included in the insurance scheme due to its short production cycle. However, Das said the state already provides compensation of up to ₹20,000 for unnatural poultry deaths caused by incidents such as fire or bird flu.

Livestock owners can obtain details and enrol at nearby ARDD hospitals, sub-centres and dispensaries. Mandatory requirements include a 12-digit ear-tag barcode, a photograph of the animal with its owner, Aadhaar card and bank passbook.

Das urged livestock rearers to take advantage of the scheme and insure their animals.
