Tripura Legislative Assembly pays tribute to Sitaram Yechury

Agartala, 13th January 2025:   The Tripura Legislative Assembly winter session paid tribute to former Rajya Sabha MP and Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury today. All members including the Speaker and Deputy Speaker stood and observed a two-minute silence to honor his memory.

Speaker Biswabandhu Sen shared that Sitaram Yechury passed away on September 12, 2024, at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi due to a serious respiratory infection. He was 72 years old. Yechury is survived by his wife Seema Chishti, son Danish, and daughter Akhila. In accordance with his wishes, his body was donated to AIIMS for medical research.

“Sitaram Yechury’s death is an irreparable loss to the political arena of our country. He was a wise, liberal, and skilled politician who carved a unique niche in the political history of the country through his ideals and struggles,” said Speaker Sen.

Born on August 12, 1952, in Chennai, Yechury was a talented individual from a young age. He excelled academically, securing first place in the CBSE Class XII examination and obtaining degrees from St. Stephen’s College and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Yechury began his political career in 1974 with the Students Federation of India and joined the CPI(M) in 1975. He was elected to the Politburo in 1992 and served as the General Secretary of the party from April 19, 2015, until his death. As a Rajya Sabha MP, he represented West Bengal from 2005 to 2017.

The assembly expressed deep sorrow over Yechury’s untimely demise and extended heartfelt condolences to his family. The session concluded with a respectful two-minute silence in his memory.
