Agartala, 23rd April 2025: Alleging a disturbing rise in crimes against women in the state, the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan, demanding strict action and exemplary punishment for the culprits.
A delegation of the Mahila Congress met DGP Ranjan and launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP government, accusing it of failing to ensure safety for women during its seven-year tenure in Tripura.
“The BJP government has done nothing for the people of Tripura in these seven years. Instead, the state has earned a reputation for poor governance. Despite the Chief Minister’s frequent claims of ‘good governance’, the ground reality is the opposite,” the delegation alleged in the memorandum.
Citing official data presented during the last Assembly session, the Mahila Congress pointed out that the state recorded 144 incidents of rape and gang-rape and 31 cases of murder of women during the 2023-24 period.
“Our state has been reduced to one of the most backward in terms of safety, with administrative and executive failures evident across all levels. The ruling dispensation is busy projecting itself as the protector of women’s dignity, but the truth tells a different story,” the delegation stated.
Taking a jibe at central government schemes, they added, “Slogans like ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ and the tales of ‘Lakhpati Didis’ have become a cruel joke in the face of increasing crimes against women.”
The delegation further alleged that law and order in the state have completely collapsed, attributing the crisis to the politicization of law enforcement agencies.
“Despite the Chief Minister’s regular talk of ‘zero tolerance’ against crime, the situation on the ground is deteriorating. Nobody seems to take his words seriously,” the Mahila Congress leaders said.
“In his so-called ‘Ram Rajya’, we want to ask the Chief Minister — where does Mata Sita hide herself to protect her chastity?” they questioned, drawing a sharp parallel between mythology and the current law-and-order situation.
Concluding their appeal, the Mahila Congress warned that if swift and stern action is not taken against those involved in crimes against women, they would be forced to launch a statewide agitation.
