Agartala, 5th March 2026: The festival of Holi in Tripura has witnessed over three accidents while 20 were detained for drink and drive and 445 preventive arrests were made to maintain peace and security during the Holi celebrations.
Tripura Police said that security had been tightened across the state for Holi celebrations, with personnel deployed at key locations and highways to prevent untoward incidents and ensure the safety of citizens.
Despite the festive atmosphere, several road traffic accidents (RTA) were reported from different parts of the state during the day. In one tragic incident at Uttam Bhakta Chowmuhani under Sepahijala district, a collision between a bike and a truck claimed the life of one person. The deceased has been identified as Prasenjit Ghosh, who was brought dead following the accident.
In another incident near Holy Cross College in Lefunga under West District around 6:45 pm, an unknown vehicle allegedly hit a mentally challenged man. The injured person was immediately shifted to AGMC and GBP Hospital for medical treatment.
Earlier in the evening at around 5:10 pm, a self-accident took place in Melaghar of Sepahijala District where Akas Mia of Mohanbhog sustained head and neck injuries. He was reportedly injured after losing control of his vehicle.
Meanwhile, Tripura Police conducted extensive enforcement drives across the state to prevent drunk driving and ensure safe celebrations. During the operation, 20 individuals were detained for drunk driving.
Police also carried out preventive measures under the Tripura Police Act, detaining 206 persons for drinking and roaming in public places. Altogether, a total of 445 preventive arrests were made to maintain peace and security during the Holi celebrations.
Traffic enforcement teams also issued 330 challans under the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, collecting a total fine amount of Rs 5,69,500. Additionally, Rs 13,000 was realised as fines specifically for overspeeding violations.
