Agartala, 25th December 2024:   December 26th of 2024 marks the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency of the Indian National Congress, a significant milestone in India’s history. The Tripura Pradesh Congress Bhavan celebrated this day with a series of events, including a wreath-laying ceremony at Gandhiji’s portrait and a visit to Gandhi Ghat to pay homage to his martyrdom altar.

The event was attended by prominent leaders, including former Congress President and MLA Birjit Sinha, former Congress President Piyush Kanti Biswas, and other dignitaries. The Indian National Congress, founded in 1885, is the first and oldest political organization that played a pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence from the British Empire. Mahatma Gandhi was elected as the President of the National Congress in the 1924 session held in Belgaum, where he declared non-violent non-cooperation as the path to political independence.

Addressing the media, former Congress President Piyush Kanti Biswas stated, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be forced to resign in protest of his derogatory comments on Dr. BR Ambedkar. The Congress is going to take to the field in the coming days to protest against this.” The remarks have sparked a wave of protests and calls for accountability.

The centenary celebration not only honored Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy but also highlighted the ongoing commitment of the Congress party to uphold the values and principles he championed. The event served as a reminder of the enduring impact of Gandhiji’s leadership and the importance of non-violent resistance in achieving political and social change.
