Agartala, 11th September 2025:    Tripura native Swapnajit Choudhury has been stranded in Nepal following a sudden escalation of political unrest in the country. Choudhury, a PhD scholar based in Kolkata and son of Khokan Choudhury from Old Agartala, had travelled to Nepal on September 4 to attend an international seminar.

The seminar concluded on September 8 and he was scheduled to return to Kolkata the following day. However, violent protests erupted across Nepal that night, disrupting normalcy and leaving Choudhury and several others unable to leave the country. According to his father, around 40 Indian students who participated in the same seminar are also stranded.

Family sources revealed that due to a breakdown in network services, Choudhury’s parents were unable to contact him for two consecutive days, leading to intense anxiety. Although communication was eventually restored, the family remains deeply concerned about his safety and uncertain return.

Khokan Choudhury has appealed to both the Tripura state government and the central authorities to facilitate the safe repatriation of his son and other Indian students. “Everything changed overnight. We had no news for two days. Even now, we are extremely worried about his condition,” he said.

Nepal has been witnessing widespread unrest over the past few days, with youth-led protests turning violent in several regions including the capital, Kathmandu. Incidents of arson, vandalism, and blockades have disrupted daily life and severely affected foreign nationals. International flights are being cancelled, and border controls have tightened, leaving families of stranded Indians in a state of deep distress.
