Agartala, 6th August 2026: Tripura Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman on Thursday announced an ambitious target to raise the state’s higher education participation rate from the current 22 percent to 75 percent by 2030. He said the transformation of the higher education system is essential to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India.
Addressing a review meeting titled Higher Education Dialogue at the administrative building of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University, the minister stressed that students must remain at the centre of all policy decisions.
“Our objective is clear. By 2030, Tripura must achieve a 75 percent enrolment and participation rate in higher education. To accomplish this, we need modern infrastructure, a healthy academic environment, and close coordination among teachers, students, and the administration,” Barman said.
He emphasized that the development of educational institutions cannot be achieved by the government alone. Equal participation from ministers, administrators, faculty members, and students is essential to strengthen the higher education system, he added.
The meeting reviewed infrastructure development across colleges, discussed existing challenges, and explored ways to improve coordination among students, teachers, and administrators. The minister announced that MBB University, MBB College, BBMC College, and the Law College would be integrated into a unified academic ecosystem and developed into model educational institutions by 2030.
Barman also underlined the importance of giving greater weight to the views of students who regularly attend classes and actively use institutional facilities such as libraries, laboratories, and canteens. “Students’ voices should form the foundation of every major policy decision,” he said.
The minister further announced that similar review meetings would be held in every district to identify and resolve local issues promptly. He urged college authorities to address minor problems at the institutional level instead of referring every matter to the ministry.
On the expansion of higher education, Barman said that the proposed Tripura Technical University and Women’s University, both approved by the State Assembly and the Governor, are expected to begin academic activities soon with the commencement of admissions. He added that the final decision on the proposed Medical University would be taken by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.
Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder and senior officials of the Higher Education Department were also present at the meeting.
Concluding the programme, the minister said that the 2030 vision is not merely about increasing enrolment but about building a modern, inclusive, and vibrant higher education system that nurtures talent, instills confidence, and prepares students to become future leaders of the country.
