Agartala, 26th November 2024:   The Tripura government is poised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the MOHAN Foundation in January 2025 to streamline cadaveric organ donation for patients in need of transplants.

Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of GB Pant Hospital, revealed that the hospital recently performed its first successful kidney transplants, completing two procedures.

“While there is significant demand for organ transplants, a lack of willingness among people to donate organs remains a challenge. During a visit from representatives of Shija Hospital in Manipur, they recommended the MOHAN Foundation as a potential partner. Following discussions, the foundation agreed to collaborate with us in raising awareness and implementing this initiative,” said Dr. Chakraborty.

He explained that the program would primarily focus on organ retrieval from brain-dead patients.

“Organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart, and corneas can be harvested from patients declared brain-dead or deceased at the hospital, with consent from their families. This initiative will significantly benefit patients within the state, eliminating the need for costly travel or external donor searches. At our trauma center, we often handle cases involving accidental deaths, which could provide a viable source for organ donations,” Dr. Chakraborty added.

To ensure proper implementation, a detailed orientation program addressing legal and procedural aspects is being planned.

“Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha is fully supportive of this initiative. Senior officials have also discussed the framework extensively. The MOHAN Foundation team is expected to visit in January 2025, and we anticipate formalizing the partnership through an MoU,” he said.
