Agartala, 10th July 2025: Tripura witnessed a significant pre-monsoon rainfall deficit this year, with overall precipitation dipping 17% below normal, according to a study released by the Meteorological Centre, Agartala.
Prepared by scientists Rana Das and Dr. Partha Roy, the report shows that the state recorded just 555.2 mm of rainfall between March and May, falling short of the seasonal average. Data for the assessment was collected from two key observatories—Agartala and Kailashahar in Unakoti district.
Out of the eight districts, Dhalai, Gomati, and Unakoti experienced deficient rainfall, while the other five, including Khowai, registered normal precipitation. Khowai district topped the charts, recording rainfall on par with the average (0% departure), whereas Dhalai saw the highest deficit at 32%.
In the state capital, Agartala faced a 22% shortfall, with drastic month-wise departures: -98% in March, -38% in April, and -2% in May. On the other hand, Kailashahar showed signs of recovery, ending the season with a modest 2% surplus. This came despite staggering deficits in March (-99%) and April (-43%), thanks to a significant 29% surplus in May.
The report noted that the pre-monsoon period in India is generally characterized by soaring temperatures and convective weather systems. While maximum temperatures hovered around normal, minimum temperatures in Agartala remained consistently above average in March and April. On May 10, Agartala recorded the season’s peak at 38.5°C, closely followed by Kailashahar at 37.6°C.
The report also highlighted variability in thunderstorm activity. Agartala recorded 10% fewer thunderstorm days than normal, while Kailashahar logged a 9% increase. Rainy days stood at 18 in Agartala and 29 in Kailashahar, while thunderstorm days were 30 and 37, respectively.
