Agartala, 27th January 2026: Tripura’s pride, the Geographical Indication (GI) tagged Matabari Peda, took center stage at the Republic Day high tea hosted by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The traditional milk-based sweet, renowned for its distinctive cardamom-infused caramelized flavor and soft texture, was served alongside Pati-Sapta Pitha, another delicacy from Tripura and Assam.
The inclusion of these regional specialties at the prestigious national event has been hailed as a moment of cultural recognition for Tripura. Matabari Peda, produced in the revered temple town of Udaipur, not only carries historical and religious significance but also sustains local communities, particularly women engaged in its preparation.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed his delight on social media, sharing: “Hon’ble President of India hosted a high tea at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Republic Day. Delighted to see our Matabari Peda & Pati Sapta Pitha from Tripura gracing the occasion – celebrating our rich cultural heritage…”
