Agartala, 19th April 2026: Following the declaration of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) election results on April 17, several parts of the state have witnessed post-poll tensions, prompting visits from senior government leaders and renewed calls for peace.
The Tipra Motha Party secured a decisive victory in the council polls, winning 24 out of 28 seats, after which incidents of unrest were reported in certain pockets of Khowai and South Tripura districts. During these episodes, reports emerged of vandalism and arson targeting political offices and properties, leading to concerns over law and order in affected areas.
In response, state ministers including Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy and Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma toured several impacted locations such as Ramchandraghat, Asarambari, Teliamura, and Krishnapur. They reviewed the situation on the ground, interacted with affected families, and assessed property damage, including reported destruction of party offices in some areas.
Officials described the situation as unfortunate and stressed the need for restraint across political lines. They emphasized that political rivalry should not translate into harm for ordinary citizens, many of whom have reportedly been displaced or temporarily relocated in relief arrangements.
The ministers also said they had reached out to Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, urging him to appeal to party supporters for calm and to help de-escalate tensions. They highlighted concerns that local communities, including tribal families, were bearing the brunt of the unrest and called for restoration of normalcy ahead of upcoming cultural events in the state.
Meanwhile, in parts of South Tripura, similar incidents of damage to political offices were reported. Authorities noted that investigations are ongoing and security measures have been strengthened in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.
Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has also publicly appealed for peace and unity in the aftermath of the elections, urging all communities to maintain harmony. Officials said such appeals are important as the administration works to restore stability and ensure that political differences do not disrupt public life or community relations in the region.
