Agartala, 7th May 2026: A daring burglary at two shops located right next to Belonia Police Station has sent shockwaves across the town, leaving traders anxious and outraged. The incidents took place at a tailoring shop and a homeopathy medicine store.
Reportedly, homeopathy shop owner Sanjay Chakraborty this morning arrived to open his store and noticed the tailoring shop’s door ajar with a broken lock lying on the floor. He immediately alerted tailoring shop owner Sulekha Deb.
Upon inspection, Deb discovered that burglars had cut through the tin partition of her shop to gain entry into the adjacent homeopathy store. Later, Chakraborty found his own shop ransacked, with the cash box completely tampered, though other items remained untouched.
Initial findings suggest that cash was stolen from both shops, but the exact amount of loss is yet to be determined.
Belonia police station staff rushed to the scene and recovered tools suspected to have been used to break the locks. A case has been registered, and investigators are reviewing nearby CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
Meanwhile, the Belonia Traders’ Association has raised serious concerns over security, questioning how such thefts could occur right under the nose of the police. Association president Manik Pal expressed anger, stating, “If shops near the police station are not safe, where should ordinary traders go?” He demanded immediate reinforcement of night patrols across the town.
The back-to-back thefts have reignited fears among the business community, highlighting vulnerabilities in Belonia’s night-time security arrangements.
