Two held in massive rod theft at Dharmanagar

Date:

Agartala, 25th April 2026 :   Dharmanagar has been rocked by a major theft incident after nearly four tons of construction rods were stolen from a residential school building under construction in the Sonaro Basa Bonbari area. The school is being built as part of the Pujya Ashok Singhal Seva Project, run by the Vishva Hindu Parishad.

According to police, the theft occurred on April 18, and a written complaint was lodged at Dharmanagar police station. Acting swiftly, investigators managed to recover about 1.5 tons of the stolen rods the same day. Two residents of Yakubnagar’s Ward No. 5, Goyas Mia and his son Rahul Mia, were arrested and produced in court.

Further investigation revealed more startling details. Police found that the rods had been hidden in a pond belonging to one Sulaz Mia. When officers went to arrest him yesterday, he attempted to flee by jumping into the pond but was quickly apprehended. Based on his interrogation, another suspect, Abdul Kalam, was also arrested from his residence.

Today, both Sulaz Mia and Abdul Kalam were presented before the court.

The incident has triggered widespread concern in the area, with locals questioning the adequacy of security measures at construction sites. Residents warned that unless stronger safeguards are put in place, such thefts could become more frequent.
