Agartala, 25th April 2026 : Two impoverished sisters from Kanchan Mala Gram Panchayat’s Ward No. 6 have been deprived of old-age pension benefits for many years. The sisters, Tulo Rani Das and Taru Bala Das, both over 60, have repeatedly applied for the pension but remain excluded.
Taru Bala Das, who has neither husband nor children, spends her final years living with her sister Tulo Rani and nephew Ranjit Das. Despite his own hardships, Ranjit, a daily wage laborer, cares for both his mother and aunt with equal devotion. His household includes his wife and children, making him the sole breadwinner for the entire family.
Ranjit struggles to provide two meals a day by working in others’ homes, and the family currently faces severe financial distress. On Saturday morning, Tulo Rani Das spoke to journalists, expressing her frustration. She revealed that since the Left regime, the sisters have been applying for the pension but have never received it. She added that the allowance would have helped cover their monthly medical expenses.
In a moment of anguish, Tulo Rani showed her worn-out clothes drying in the sun to reporters, saying, “Show this to Narendra Modi. See how poor we are. Today we are forced to wear torn clothes.”
Both sisters have now appealed to the state government to grant them the old-age pension, which they believe is their rightful support in these difficult times.
