Agartala, 29th September 2026 : Polling for the Village Committee elections in Mungiakami Block under Teliamura subdivision concluded peacefully on Monday, but tension was reported later in the area following allegations of a post-poll assault that left two persons injured.
According to local sources, BJP worker Sanjay Debbarma and driver Parimal Das were allegedly attacked while returning after the sealed ballot boxes of Tashil Debbarma, the BJP-nominated NDA candidate for the 18-Mura ADC Village, were deposited at Mungiakami Block.
An allegation was raised against Lakshmiranjan Debbarma, a Group-D employee of the Fire Services Department, who was accused of stopping the duo on the road near the block premises and assaulting them. Both reportedly sustained serious injuries and were initially taken to Mungiakami Primary Health Centre.
As their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment around 9 pm. Following the incident, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, accompanied by BJP leaders from the 29-Krishnapur Mandal, visited the Mungiakami PHC and spoke with doctors regarding the injured persons.
Later, at around 11 pm, Minister Bikash Debbarma, BJP State Yuva Morcha’s Swachh Bharat in-charge Nirmal Debnath and other party leaders visited GBP Hospital and sought necessary arrangements for the treatment of the injured.
Minister Bikash Debbarma said a case would be filed at the police station and demanded strict legal action against the accused, expressing confidence that the administration would take the matter seriously.
The exact circumstances and motive behind the alleged assault, however, remain to be established. The details are expected to emerge following a police investigation and statements from all sides.
