Agartala, 15th May 2026: In a bid to increase fish production and safeguard the livelihood of local fishermen, the Melaghar Rudrasagar Refugee Fishermen Cooperative Society has released nearly two lakh large-sized fingerlings into the Rudrasagar Lake this year, continuing its annual practice. The stocked varieties include rohu, catla, bighead carp, and other species.
Cooperative president Pabitra Kumar Das stated that the decision to release older, larger fingerlings was taken to ensure quick growth, enabling fishermen to harvest them within a short period. He added that the society has invested approximately ₹15 lakh in this initiative.
Secretary Parameshwar Das explained that the program is funded primarily through the cooperative’s resources, aiming to benefit nearly 2,000 member families. Of these, 300–400 families living around Rudrasagar are directly engaged in fishing. Traditionally, permits are issued to fishermen during Durga Puja, about 15 days prior, allowing them to use nets and hooks to catch fish. This attracts fishing enthusiasts from across the state to Rudrasagar.
The stocking event saw participation from social worker Uttam Das, Sipahijala district’s South Youth Morcha president Supanku Sarkar, and other cooperative members. The initiative has sparked enthusiasm and joy among the local fishing community, who view it as a vital step toward sustaining their livelihood.
