Agartala, 10th January 2026: The Udaipur District Congress today held a press conference at the District Congress Bhavan, strongly opposing the central government’s decision to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the MGNREGA scheme. The meeting also raised demands to safeguard citizens’ right to work, fair wages, and accountability.
The press conference was attended by District Congress president Titon Pal, Pradesh Congress general secretary Milan Kar, R.K. Pur Block Congress president Ranjit Debnath, Matabari Block Congress president Jaydev Kanti Roy, District Minority Congress president Roshan Mia, along with several other leaders.
Speaking at the event, District Congress president Titon Pal said, “MGNREGA is not just an employment scheme; it is directly linked to the livelihood of the poor, working class, and rural population. Removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the project is an insult to his ideals and contributions.”
The Congress leadership put forward several demands: Guarantee every citizen’s right to work, fair wages, and accountability. Immediately restore and strengthen the MGNREGA scheme with increased budget allocation. Reinstate the constitutional right to work. Fix a nationwide minimum wage of ₹400 per day.
Pal accused the central government of deliberately weakening MGNREGA by reducing budget allocations, failing to provide adequate work, and delaying wage payments, which has left millions of workers in distress. He emphasized that strengthening the scheme is crucial for reviving the rural economy, warning that its dismantling would disproportionately affect minorities and marginalized communities.
The Congress leaders cautioned that if their demands are not met, the party will launch a larger statewide movement. They also called for the immediate withdrawal of the government’s decision to drop Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the scheme.
