Agartala, 17th October 2025: A 27-year-old woman Shabnur Begum was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws’ residence in Khilpara, Udaipur, prompting her family to file a murder complaint against her husband and his relatives. The victim’s father Saken Mia lodged an FIR at RK Pur Police Station, alleging that Shabnur was strangled and killed, and that the incident is being falsely portrayed as suicide.
According to the complaint, Shabnur had been married for three and a half years to Hasan Chowdhury of Khilpara Amtali. Her family claims that she faced continuous domestic abuse and dowry-related harassment since the marriage. They further allege that Hasan was involved in an extramarital affair, which intensified tensions within the household.
Saken Mia stated that he received a phone call around 6 PM on Wednesday, October 15, informing him of his daughter’s death. Upon arrival, the family found Shabnur’s body lying on the floor. They believe she was tortured and killed, citing visible injury marks on her body.
Shabnur, a graduate with a B.Ed degree, had recently missed qualifying for the 2024 TET exam by a narrow margin. Despite financial hardships, she was striving for self-reliance. Her family insists she was not suicidal and point to her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter as further reason to doubt the suicide claim.
Police have registered a case under sections related to domestic violence and dowry harassment. SDPO Debjani Roy confirmed that Hasan Chowdhury has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody until October 30. “The investigation is ongoing, and the truth will emerge after thorough interrogation,” she said.
Local residents have also called for a fair and transparent investigation, demanding the strictest punishment for those found guilty.
