Agartala, 10th January 2026:   The Saydarpara–Shimultala area under Fatikroy police station in Tripura’s Unakoti district witnessed large-scale violence, as the rampage of miscreants turned the locality into a virtual battlefield. Defying law and order, houses, shops and vehicles were set ablaze, triggering panic among residents.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, a group of miscreants launched a planned attack from Saturday morning. A wooden shop and stacks of hay kept in front of several houses were reduced to ashes. Multiple houses and vehicles were vandalised, while clashes between rival groups left several innocent people injured.

As the situation spiralled out of control, a heavy contingent of security forces was rushed to the spot. Personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), CRPF and Assam Rifles cordoned off the area. Police resorted to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd, while drone surveillance was deployed to monitor the situation.

Unakoti District Magistrate Dr Tamal Majumdar and Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai visited the affected area. The administration imposed Section 163 along with a curfew in the locality. To prevent the spread of rumours and further escalation, mobile internet services have been suspended across Unakoti district for 48 hours.

Speaking to the media, SP Avinash Rai said miscreants deliberately entered the area and set fire to property. He said security forces were immediately deployed and strict action is being taken. “Ten people have already been arrested, and the police are proceeding strictly as per law,” he added.

Local sources said the violence reportedly stemmed from a dispute over collection of puja donations. An argument broke out after a driver refused to pay the demanded amount, which soon escalated into arson and clashes involving two groups.

Although the administration has stated that the situation is now under control, tension continues to prevail. Police patrolling has been intensified, and authorities have warned against attempts to give the incident a communal colour, stating such actions will be dealt with firmly.
