Agartala, 29th June 2025 : A 60-year-old undertrial prisoner, Kailash Roy, died on Sunday afternoon while being transported from the Central Correctional Institution to the Bishalgarh Sub-divisional Hospital, triggering serious allegations of custodial torture.
Roy, a resident of Khejur Bagan under NCC police station in Agartala, had been recently remanded to judicial custody following his arrest in connection with a scuffle that broke out during a funeral. Jail authorities claimed his health suddenly deteriorated inside the correctional facility, prompting an emergency transfer to the hospital. However, he reportedly died before reaching the hospital.
Tensions escalated after Roy’s family refused to accept the body, alleging he was tortured while in custody and demanding that his remains be returned in the condition he was in when taken into detention. “We want justice. He was fine when they took him. What happened inside the jail?” one of the family members said. With no breakthrough after hours of standoff at Bishalgarh Hospital, police eventually shifted the body to GBP Hospital in Agartala for post-mortem examination.
As of now, prison authorities have not issued an official statement. The incident has raised serious questions about inmate safety and the potential for custodial abuse. The family has demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Roy’s death.
