Agartala, 8th August 2026 : . Veteran CPI(M) leader, former legislator, and prominent women’s rights activist Comrade Gauri Bhattacharjee passed away on Saturday at the age of 92 due to age-related ailments. Her demise marks the end of a significant chapter in Tripura’s Left movement and women’s movement.
Bhattacharjee was closely associated with the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) for several decades, playing a pivotal role in its campaigns and programs. She was deeply involved in struggles for women’s rights and broader public issues.
A familiar face in the early phase of Tripura’s Left politics, Bhattacharjee was among the state’s pioneering women legislators. She won from the Borjola constituency as a CPI(M) candidate in the 1977 Assembly elections, retained the seat in 1983, and served as MLA until 1988.
Her long political career was marked by organizational discipline, commitment to people’s movements, and dedication to women’s rights. For younger generations of activists, her role in the women’s movement remains a source of inspiration.
Former Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar expressed deep sorrow, recalling her contributions to Left politics and women’s struggles. CPI(M) Tripura State Secretary Jitendra Choudhury also paid tribute, describing her as a dedicated comrade whose lifelong commitment to organization and people’s causes set an example.
Her passing has cast a shadow of grief among party workers and activists across various mass movements. Leaders and supporters remembered her as a fighter whose ideals and legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
