Agartala, 8th August 2026 : The Gomati District Youth Congress has raised strong objections to the sharp rise in electricity bills and alleged pressure on consumers to install smart meters, submitting a six-point deputation to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) in Udaipur.
The organisation said it has been highlighting the issue for the past three months, claiming that electricity bills for average households have increased substantially in recent months. According to the Youth Congress, consumers who previously paid around Rs 500– Rs 600 per month are now receiving bills of Rs 1,500–Rs 2,000, despite no significant increase in electricity consumption or addition of new appliances.
The Youth Congress questioned the reason behind the steep increase and demanded a clear explanation from the authorities. It also alleged that consumers were being pressured to install smart meters, despite its claim that such installation is optional under Supreme Court directions.
The 31-RK Pur Block Youth Congress organised a protest against the alleged hike in electricity charges and difficulties faced by consumers during prepaid card recharge. A five-member delegation subsequently submitted the deputation to Ananda Sarkar, Deputy General Manager of TSECL at the Udaipur (Bandhuar Electrical Division) office.
The delegation included 31-Radhakishorepur Block Youth Congress president Prasenjit Banerjee, Gomati District Youth Congress president Indrajit Das and general secretary Pritam Baidya, besides other district and block-level leaders.
The organisation’s demands included reduction of electricity tariffs and meter charges, immediate withdrawal of smart meters, an end to alleged harassment over prepaid recharges, clearance of outstanding dues to TSECL contractors and expedited recruitment to fill vacancies in the Electricity Department.
The Youth Congress warned that failure to address the demands promptly would lead to a larger movement in the coming days.
