Village council polls: Pradyot threatens to intensify agitation

Date:

By TC News Desk

Agartala, June 19, 2023: The village council vote is being postponed due to various pretexts. Sometimes because of COVID pandemic, sometimes on the pretext of town and city polls and sometimes the names of Reang refugees were not mentioned in the voter list. During the COVID period, the gatherings and political programs continued, but only the village council was not held and TIPRA Motha approached the High Court to vote. Despite the High Court’s order, the vote did not take place. TIPRA Motha’s chairman Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has warned that the Tiprasas’ of the village will join the movement for the village council elections. His speech reveal that the vote is being delayed as there is a fear of defeat by the state’s ruling party. He returned to the state on Monday after treatment.

Responding to questions from reporters at the airport, Tiprasas warned that they would embark on a larger movement to demand their rights. The political circles feel that the honeymoon with the BJP is over. The state government is recognizing Tiprasa as second class citizens. He blamed BJP responsible for depriving Tiprasa and not developing the ADC areas. However, Motha paved the way for the BJP to come to power for the second time by fielding candidates in 42 seats in the last assembly polls.

TIPRA Motha’s supremo angry with central government’s stance on Greater Tipraland and Interlocutor. Besides, the party is also breaking down. Motha Supremo revealed that those who did not get tickets in the assembly polls, those who are not able to earn through illegal means are leaving Motha to register their names in BJP. According to him, they can go for NREGA work, jobs, election tickets and money. He has no objection to that. But they will not get emotional satisfaction by going to BJP.

In short, TIPRA Motha and ‘Bubagra’ is in extreme political crisis. Especially in the complex situation of the current state politics, there is extreme confusion and doubt among the party legislators on the question of what position the party is taking. Moreover, at this moment there is an extreme crisis going on in the hills. There is no work, there is an extreme crisis of drinking water, and the entire people of the hills are in financial crisis. In case of illness, many people cannot afford treatment. Thousands of youths are migrating to the state due to job crisis. Not that being interstate is good either.

In this situation, the main opposition party of the state, TIPRA Motha, has no specific statement, no political program. Bubagra is disillusioned with the way the party is breaking up in the hills ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He called a plenary session to prevent the party from breaking up. But so far the date has to be changed three times. The plenary session of the party will be held on July 4 and 5 next.

However, the statement of BJP’s Janjati leaders is waiting for a major breakthrough in July. Many MLAs and MDCs are in touch with BJP leaders, the ruling party leaders themselves said Now Bubagra’s speech about ‘Greater Tipraland’ does not have that intensity ‘Greater Tipraland’ is declining. So now Motha Supremo’s speech is in the hearts of the people of ‘Greater Tipraland’. He also thinks that ‘Greater Tipraland’ will meet one day. On the other hand, he accused the BJP of breaking its promise.

Ahead of the Assembly polls, the BJP had promised direct payments to ADCs, more powers, financial support for public welfare in its manifesto. None has fulfilled and ADC in financial crisis.

Leaders and workers of a large section of the party have started questioning the leadership of the ADC. ADC is the protector of the Tiprasa. It is designed with this goal in mind. On the eve of the ADC polls, Bubagra himself had promised that there would be no more problems if TIPRA Motha came to power in the ADC. But today, the ADC administration has become all over the opposite signboard. Employment of the unemployed is far away, even ordinary Jhumia families could not afford financial support for Jhumia cultivation alone. Health services are at the bottom.

In this situation, Pradyot has no other option but to start a struggle against the BJP. That’s why he called for opposition unity. Even though he was not an MLA himself, he went to MLAs conference in Maharashtra. He did not forget to mention the increasing importance of regional parties. All in all, heads are fighting to keep the party organized, to prevent breakdown and to divert people’s attention. At hand is the issue of Kokborok language in Roman script. So what is the objection to brainwashing the people?
