Agartala, 2nd April 2025:   The residents of area No. 3 in Chandipur assembly constituency’s Gram Panchayat took to the Kumarghat-Kailasahar National Highway early this morning in a dramatic protest against a severe drinking water shortage that has plagued their village for over a year. The blockade has been fueled by frustration over administrative inaction brought traffic to a complete standstill leaving commuters stranded and agitated.

According to local sources, the village has been grappling with a persistent lack of access to clean drinking water. Despite repeated appeals to the authorities, their requests have gone unanswered. One protester remarked, “We have been asking for help for months. How long can we survive without drinking water? The administration has ignored our cries for too long.” This growing discontent culminated in today’s blockade, with villagers demanding immediate action from the administration to address their plight.

The impromptu blockade caused significant disruption, forcing vehicles to halt on the busy highway. Commuters faced extreme difficulties as they were stranded in the sweltering heat for hours. A bus passenger, visibly distressed, shared, “We understand the villagers’ problem, but this situation has caused chaos. We are stuck here with no clear solution.”

Upon receiving news of the protest, high-ranking officials from the local administration rushed to the scene to mediate the situation. After hours of discussion, the officials assured the villagers that their concerns would be addressed promptly. “We understand the gravity of the issue and are committed to resolving it at the earliest. Please bear with us,” stated an official during the dialogue.

Following the assurance from the administration, the villagers agreed to withdraw the blockade, allowing traffic to resume on the highway. However, the villagers warned that should the promises remain unfulfilled, they would be forced to escalate their protests further. “We hope this time the authorities will take us seriously. We are prepared to fight for our basic rights if needed,” said another protester.

This blockade highlights the critical need for immediate attention to basic infrastructure and drinking water facilities in rural communities. While the blockade has been lifted for now, the underlying issue remains unresolved, underscoring the urgency of government action to avoid such crises in the future.
