Agartala, 30th December 2025: Villagers in Konakpur, under Nurpur Gram Panchayat of Kailashahar, staged a protest by blocking the Kacherghat–Srinathpur road, demanding the removal of a high-voltage 33 kV power line passing through a densely populated area.
Local sources reported that the power line in Konakpur had been hanging well below the prescribed height for a long time. Despite repeated complaints to the electricity department, no effective action was taken, raising serious safety concerns for the residents.
The situation escalated on Monday, December 29, around 7 PM, when a moving goods-laden truck came into contact with the power line near Konakpur pond. The truck immediately caught fire and was completely burned. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
In protest of this incident, villagers gathered on Tuesday around noon and blocked the Kacherghat–Srinathpur road. They burned tires on the road to express their anger and demanded the immediate relocation of the high-voltage power line away from the densely populated area. They also warned that the blockade would continue until they received a written or clear assurance from the authorities.
Upon receiving information about the blockade, police from Kailashahar and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control. Police officials held extended discussions with the protesters and assured them that the electricity department would be contacted promptly and necessary action would be taken to relocate the power line.
Following the assurance, the villagers lifted the blockade around 2:30 PM. However, during the protest, traffic on both sides of the Kacherghat–Srinathpur road was severely affected, causing significant inconvenience to daily commuters and pedestrians.
