Agartala, 4th May 2026: Allegations of political violence surfaced in Tripura today as CPI(M) party offices in Sonamura and Kamalpur came under attack following BJP’s victory celebrations.
Reportedly, the incidents took place shortly after the announcement of assembly election results in five states. BJP registered sweeping wins in West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry, while in Tripura, party candidate Jahar Chakraborty secured a decisive victory in the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly by-election.
In Sonamura, a victory procession organized by the BJP Mandal reportedly turned violent. Led by Mandal president Shubrajit Das, district president Uttam Das, and youth leader Shubhankar Sarkar, the rally culminated in an assault on the local CPI(M) office. Party flags and decorations were destroyed, and attempts were made to vandalize the premises.
A similar incident was reported in Kamalpur, where BJP supporters allegedly stormed the CPI(M) office during their victory march. Firecrackers were thrown inside the premises, causing damage and panic among party workers.
Despite multiple attacks, eyewitnesses claim police did not intervene to stop the violence. CPI(M) leaders have condemned the incidents, accusing the ruling party of misusing power in the plains while spreading fear in the hills.
