Agartala, 6th March 2026: Agartala’s law and order situation is coming under scrutiny as violent groups are increasingly causing disturbances during nighttime. Despite multiple police stations across the city and a modern administrative setup, even senior officials seem to remain inactive after hours, leaving the city vulnerable to lawless elements. Citizens are increasingly anxious about when and where the next incident might occur.
A recent example of this is the violent incident in the Krishnanagar area under West Agartala Police Station, which occurred on the night of Rangoli (Rongkhela) celebrations. The conflict began with a dispute between a Maruti car driver, whose vehicle had no number plate, and a scooter rider. The argument escalated into a physical fight, leaving the scooter rider and another person injured.
Soon, a group of youths arrived at the scene and launched a counter-attack on the scooter rider, resulting in multiple injuries. Locals intervened and eventually managed to contain the situation until the West Agartala police arrived at the scene, attending to the injured and arranging their hospitalization. Authorities arrested eight individuals in connection with the incident.
West Agartala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rana Chatterjee clarified that the incident was linked to a parking dispute in Krishnanagar. “Some have speculated on social media that this was a kidnapping. This is not a kidnapping case,” he said. The police have registered cases under relevant sections of the law and are conducting further investigations.
The incident raises serious concerns because the area is just a few steps away from residences of state ministers and bureaucrats. If security cannot be ensured there, citizens worry about the safety and law enforcement in the city’s narrower lanes. The lack of proper police deployment, especially on the night of Rangoli celebrations, is believed to have contributed to the outbreak of multiple incidents across the city.
