Water supply crisis under Jal Jeevan Mission sparks local anger

Date:

BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 24th January 2026:   Despite the installation of a pump machine under the Jal Jeevan Mission project, several families in West Kanchanmala, near SB School under the Golaghati assembly constituency, are still deprived of drinking water. The silence of the Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) department has fueled growing resentment among residents.

Locals informed that the pump was set up a few years ago with the aim of delivering potable water to every household. Although the machine continues to operate regularly, not all families are receiving water.

Affected residents allege that contractors used substandard pipelines during the project’s implementation. As a result, pipes burst whenever water pressure increases, leading to widespread leakage and preventing supply to many homes.

Residents further complain that despite repeatedly informing officials about the issue, no effective measures have been taken. They claim that although the government allocated sufficient funds to ensure water for every household, corruption in the contracting process has left ordinary people facing severe hardship.

“Even though the pump runs daily, some families receive no water at all. They are forced to fetch water from distant sources,” said one local resident.

Frustration is mounting in the community, with many describing the situation as “unacceptable exploitation of people’s most basic need—water.” On Saturday morning, affected residents approached the media to highlight their plight.

Locals are now demanding urgent intervention from the government and the DWS department, calling for pipeline repairs and a permanent solution to ensure that the benefits of the Jal Jeevan Mission truly reach every household.
