Agartala, 8th November 2025: Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to transforming the healthcare landscape, with a strong emphasis on rural health infrastructure, during the inauguration of the 19th annual conference of the Tripura chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASIOTSC) at the KLS Auditorium of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital.
Addressing a gathering of medical professionals and students, the Chief Minister stated, “The government is not only urban-centric; we are accelerating the improvement of rural health services.” He cited ongoing modernization efforts at district and sub-divisional hospitals, including the establishment of trauma centers, as key steps toward equitable healthcare access.
Dr. Saha highlighted significant advancements in the state’s medical capabilities, noting that complex treatments and surgeries for multi-system diseases are now routinely performed at referral hospitals like GBP — a feat once considered unattainable. “Kidney transplants are being successfully conducted, and we are working toward enabling liver transplants within the state,” he said, adding that the government aims to reduce the need for patients to seek treatment outside Tripura.
He expressed optimism that Tripura is on track to become a regional health hub, driven by continuous upgrades in medical services and infrastructure. “People must have faith in our healthcare system,” he urged.
The Chief Minister reported a marked decline in infant and maternal mortality rates, attributing the progress to improved healthcare delivery. He also spotlighted the expansion of telemedicine services at AGMC, with plans underway to establish a dedicated studio to enhance remote consultations. “We are sending staff outside the state for training to operate sophisticated medical equipment,” he added.
In a broader health initiative, Dr. Saha reiterated the government’s resolve to make Tripura an AIDS- and drug-free state, emphasizing a crackdown on illegal drug trade. Drawing from her own experience as a medical professional, she advised aspiring surgeons to seek mentorship and stay updated with evolving medical practices.
The Chief Minister also called upon medical organizations to actively engage in community service programs, reinforcing the role of healthcare professionals in societal development.
During the event, two doctors were honored for their distinguished contributions to medicine, and a medical student was recognized for academic excellence. The conference also featured remarks from Prof. (Dr.) Sriram Bhatt of Kasturba Medical College, Karnataka. ASIOTSC President Dr. Gitesh Ranjan Bhattacharya delivered the welcome address.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Director Dr. Debashree Debbarma, and AGMC Principal Dr. Anup Kumar Saha.
