Agartala, 6th December 2025: A woman in Kailashahar allegedly died by suicide after being unable to repay multiple microfinance loans, confirmed Pratibha Sinha, an officer at the Kailashahar Women Police Station. The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the locality. The tragedy occurred in East Kaulikura village under Kailashahar subdivision.
The deceased, Anjana Malakar, was a resident of Ward No. 3 of Kaulikura Gram Panchayat under Gournagar Block. Anjana and her husband, Parimal Malakar, were both daily wage labourers struggling with extreme poverty. According to Officer Pratibha Sinha, Anjana had taken loans from several microfinance institutions and was unable to repay them, which led to immense financial stress.
Villagers reported that due to a lack of employment opportunities in the village and surrounding areas, Anjana borrowed money from various microfinance organisations. She had reportedly taken loans from three institutions, including Bandhan and Bharat. Whenever she managed to find work, she paid the instalments. But during periods without work, she was unable to make the payments. For a long time, both she and her husband had been unemployed, leaving them unable to meet the increasing pressure from loan recovery agents who frequently visited their home demanding repayment.
Unable to cope with the relentless financial pressure, Anjana reportedly went into the nearby forest and hanged herself from a tree. She had been missing since Friday afternoon, December 5, around 4 p.m.
Her husband, Parimal Malakar, searched for her at relatives’ houses and in neighbouring homes on Friday but could not find her. On Saturday, December 6, around 10 a.m., villagers discovered her body hanging from a tree in the forest beside their home. They immediately informed the Kailashahar Women Police Station.
Police arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to Unakoti District Hospital for post-mortem examination. The tragic incident has left the entire community in deep sorrow.
