Agartala, 16th December 2024: A woman sustained injuries in a head-on collision between an auto and a Maruti car on the Khowai Dhalabil National Road Choumuni, igniting local outrage over frequent accidents due to high-speed driving. In response, residents blocked the Mohanpur-Agartala 108 National Road, demanding immediate measures to prevent further traffic accidents.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred due to excessive speeding, a common issue in the area. “Road accidents happen every day because there is no proper management by the police and traffic authorities,” a local resident stated. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, rescuing the injured woman and transporting her to Khowai District Hospital for treatment.
The road blockade, which resulted from mounting frustration among locals, caused significant disruption, including halting the convoy of Minister Sushanta Das, who was en route from Agartala to Fatikra. The minister engaged directly with the protestors to address their concerns. “We cannot ignore the continuous accidents. We need the authorities to take immediate action,” one of the protestors emphasized.
Locals pointed out that the frequent vehicle checks by the Khowai Traffic Unit every morning have not mitigated the situation. “Instead of preventing accidents, these checks are causing more issues. The traffic department and police administration need to take responsibility,” another resident commented.
Minister Sudhangshu Das, upon encountering the blockade, assured the protestors that their demands would be addressed. “I have spoken with the officials of the Khowai District Police Administration, and I assure you that steps will be taken to improve road safety,” he promised.
Based on this assurance, the blockaders lifted the road blockade, allowing traffic to resume. However, the residents remain vigilant and expect prompt action from the authorities to ensure their safety and prevent further accidents. “We hope the administration follows through on their promises. The safety of our community is at stake,” a concerned citizen declared.
