Woman rescued from Gomati River by two brave youths at Melaghar

Agartala, 24th August 2025:   A 52-year-old woman named Firoza Begum was rescued from the Gomati River near Kalamkhet area in Melaghar early this morning, thanks to the swift action and courage of two local youths.

According to family members, Begum left her home in Melaghar Char around 3 am without informing anyone. Her disappearance sparked a frantic search and by morning, news of her being missing had spread through the area.

The breakthrough came when two young men spotted her floating in the river, waving her arms for help. Without hesitation, they swam across and brought her safely to shore. Her family was immediately alerted and she was taken home.

Begum later claimed she had been pushed into the river, though local sources suggest she has previously attempted suicide. Her family stated she suffers from mental health issues.

Residents have praised the youths’ quick thinking and bravery, noting that their intervention likely prevented a tragic loss of life.
