Woman’s death sparks murder allegations in Ranirbazar; son, daughter-in-law detained

Date:

Agartala, 16th September 2026 : A woman was allegedly murdered by her son and daughter-in-law following a family dispute at Briddhanagar under Ranirbazar police station on Tuesday night, triggering tension in the area.

The deceased has been identified as Akhi Ghosh, while her son, Shubham Ghosh, is among those accused in the case.

According to family members and local residents, Shubham and his wife informed relatives and neighbours around 2 am that Akhi had died. However, they allegedly failed to provide any clear explanation regarding the circumstances of her death. They reportedly did not call a doctor or take her to a hospital.

The matter came to light after relatives and neighbours visited the house on Wednesday morning and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the death. They subsequently informed Ranirbazar police, who took the accused son and daughter-in-law into custody for questioning.

Family members have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident. Some relatives and local residents have alleged that the elderly woman may have been given sleeping pills and suffocated with a pillow, though the allegation has not yet been established.

Residents also alleged that Akhi had been subjected to prolonged physical and mental harassment by her son and daughter-in-law. They claimed that she had earlier left the house and stayed at her sister’s residence before returning home around three days ago.

According to neighbours, she was allegedly not provided adequate food after returning home. They questioned whether her death could have occurred merely because she had allegedly gone without food for a few days.

Police have taken up the matter and are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding Akhi’s death. The incident has caused widespread concern in the locality.
