Women protest water crisis in Dharmanagar, allegations of intimidation against BJP leader

Date:

Agartala, 30th June 2026:  Severe drinking water shortages have left residents of Ichai Lalchhara Gram Panchayat in Dharmanagar struggling for survival. On Tuesday morning, local women staged a road blockade to demand immediate relief, but allegations have surfaced that a BJP leader and ward member attempted to suppress the protest by intimidating the demonstrators.

Local sources informed, Ward No. 2 of Ichai Lalchhara has faced acute water scarcity since 2023. Residents complain that despite repeated appeals to the Panchayat and relevant departments, no solution has been provided. In the past four days, the situation worsened as water supply stopped completely, forcing nearly 20 families to depend on a single water point that itself fails to meet basic needs.

At around 9 a.m., women carrying water pitchers blocked the main road to draw administrative attention. After nearly two hours, BJP leader Mridul Deb and ward member Santosh Sharma arrived with party supporters. Protesters allege that instead of offering solutions, they behaved rudely, openly scolded the women, and threatened them to withdraw the blockade. Under pressure and fear, the demonstrators eventually lifted the protest.

Local citizens have condemned the incident, calling it a shameful attempt to silence a democratic movement over a fundamental right. They argue that such behavior reflects administrative failure and political arrogance. Residents have warned that unless the drinking water crisis is resolved immediately, larger and more intense protests will follow.
