Agartala, 8th July 2024:  Women activists blocked the national highway near Harina sub-health center at seven in the morning to protest against the opening of new foreign liquor outlet, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Residents reported that a new liquor counter has opened in the West Harina area, on the route from Harina to Thaibong sparking local outrage.

“We have no problem if liquor counters are provided anywhere else in Harina,” said one resident, “but we cannot allow the foreign liquor outlet in this densely populated area.” In response, women initiated the blockade on the Sabroom-Agartala National Highway from early morning, effectively halting traffic.

Upon receiving news of the protest, Sabroom police station staff rushed to the scene engaging in discussions with the protestors. “We assured the protestors that necessary actions would be taken in consultation with higher officials,” said a police spokesperson.

Following these assurances, the protestors agreed to withdraw the blockade, allowing traffic to resume.
