Agartala, 30th July 2026 : The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) on Thursday organised a workers’ rally at the foot of the Netaji statue in Dharmanagar in support of the nationwide ‘Jail Bharo’ (Fill the Jails) movement scheduled for August 10. Organised by the Dharmanagar Sub-divisional Committee of CITU, the rally witnessed the participation of a large number of workers, trade union members and supporters despite adverse weather conditions.
Addressing the gathering, the speakers highlighted various issues concerning workers’ rights and welfare, while sharply criticising several policies of the Central Government. They stressed the need to strengthen the movement to protect labour rights, generate employment opportunities, curb rising prices and address a range of public issues affecting the working class.
Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Jitendra Choudhury, attended the programme as the chief speaker. He called upon workers, farmers and people from all sections of society to extend their support to the August 10 ‘Jail Bharo’ movement, describing it as a democratic campaign for safeguarding the legitimate rights of workers and the common people.
Among others present were Jaharul Haque, Secretary of the CITU Dharmanagar Sub-divisional Committee, and Shankar Prasad Datta, State Secretary of CITU. They reiterated that the nationwide agitation aims to press for employment generation, effective measures to control inflation, protection of labour rights and the fulfilment of various public demands.
Following the rally, CITU leaders held discussions with workers and supporters to review organisational preparations for the August 10 programme and chalk out strategies for ensuring broad participation in the proposed nationwide movement.
