Agartala, 30th July 2026 : Allegations of an illegal gambling den operating from the residence of a ruling party booth president have triggered widespread resentment among residents of Gokulnagar, Bhoumik Para and nearby areas under the Kamalasagar Assembly constituency.
According to local residents, Liton Sharma, the booth president of Booth No. 40, has allegedly been allowing gambling activities to operate from his residence on a regular basis. They claim the alleged gambling sessions continue from morning until late at night, attracting outsiders and creating an atmosphere of insecurity in the locality.
Residents further alleged that a growing number of local youths have become addicted to gambling, causing distress to their families and raising concerns about their future. Several people claimed that many families are facing financial hardship due to the alleged activities, while fear of intimidation has prevented many from speaking out publicly.
Locals also alleged that complaints regarding Sharma’s conduct had surfaced earlier in sections of the media, but no visible action has been taken by either the administration or the political leadership. Some residents expressed disappointment, alleging that the continued silence of the local party leadership has encouraged such activities.
Sources claimed that the local MLA is aware of the allegations, though no official response has been made so far. However, these claims could not be independently verified.
Residents from Gokulnagar, Bhoumik Para and Deendayal Choumuhani have demanded immediate intervention by the police and district administration. They urged authorities to investigate the allegations, shut down any illegal gambling operations if found to be true, and take appropriate legal action to restore law and order and protect local youth.
