Agartala, 26th September 2026 : A two-day workshop-cum-demonstration on bamboo jewellery making was organised by the NB Institute for Rural Technology (NBIRT), with support from the SUNIL Project under the SEED Division of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to promote sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural women.
The programme was held on September 25 and 26 at the training hall of ARKANEER in Sekerkote, West Tripura. A total of 21 women from Sepahijala and West Tripura districts participated in the training.
The workshop aimed to provide alternative income-generating opportunities to rural women while encouraging eco-friendly, bamboo-based entrepreneurship. Participants received hands-on training from an experienced master trainer in making different types of bamboo jewellery, including necklaces and earrings.
Officials of NBIRT also briefed the participants on various aspects of the craft, particularly market dynamics, consumer demand, market creation and the potential of bamboo jewellery as a means of achieving economic self-reliance.
On the second day, September 26, the participants visited the Common Facility Centre (CFC) for handicrafts established by NBIRT under the SUNIL Project. The centre is equipped with modern machinery aimed at supporting bamboo artisans.
Er. Satyajit Bhattacharya demonstrated the functioning of the machinery and explained the importance of the CFC in strengthening the capabilities of bamboo artisans. Project Officer Anup Dey was also present and briefed the participants on various components of the project, with particular emphasis on the Bamboo Treatment Plant and its significance for the sector.
The former Vice-President of NBIRT, the master trainer and senior officials of the organisation were present during the programme.
The participating women expressed enthusiasm over the initiative and said that such skill-oriented training could help them develop sustainable livelihoods and move towards greater self-reliance.
