Agartala, 1st December 2025 : Despite claims of strong governance and the rule of law, a shocking incident of public humiliation and violence took place on Monday morning near Ashwini Market under Amtali Police Station.
A young female content creator identified as Madhurimaa and two men were allegedly detained by local residents after they were reportedly found with a container of brown sugar and syringes.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of local men and women tied up the three individuals and physically assaulted them. In a display described by witnesses as “medieval brutality,” the attackers forcibly shaved the woman’s head despite her repeated pleas not to cut her hair. The two accompanying men — identified as Tanmoy Malakar and Masum Mia — were also forcibly shaved.
Locals claim that although the incident unfolded over a considerable period, police from Amtali Station did not arrive promptly. When officers eventually reached the scene, they detained the three alleged suspects but did not take action against any of the residents involved in the public assault.
Community members have accused the police of acting as “protectors” of local drug networks and violent groups. They also allege that the case was later “settled quietly,” with senior officers — referred to by locals as the Boro Babu and Mejo Babu — declining to provide clear information to journalists who contacted them. One officer reportedly said he was on leave, while another claimed not to know who was assigned to the case and stated that no case was filed because nothing was recovered from the detainees.
Residents further allege that such informal settlements are common at Amtali Police Station and that senior officers often avoid responding to calls from journalists.
These allegations, if true, raise serious questions about accountability and the state of governance in the region. Police have not issued any official statement on the incident so far.
