Agartala, 31st August 2026 :   NCC Police Station staff have arrested a youth in connection with the alleged snatching of a gold chain from a female student in Abhaynagar. The electric auto-rickshaw allegedly used in the crime has also been recovered, while the stolen chain remains untraced.

According to police, the incident occurred on August 29 when two female students were walking towards Buddha Mandir behind Shantigami Club. An electric auto-rickshaw allegedly blocked their way, following which a youth got down, snatched a gold chain from one of the students and fled.

Acting on the complaint, NCC Police Station and Abhaynagar Outpost personnel examined CCTV footage and traced the vehicle, bearing registration number TR 01 L 4366. Police subsequently detained a youth from Bitarban on suspicion of involvement. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crime and told investigators that the stolen chain was with two accomplices, who are currently absconding.

Police have launched a search to arrest the remaining accused and recover the chain. The arrested youth is expected to be produced before the court on Monday, and a case has been registered at NCC Police Station.

Police sources said anti-theft and anti-snatching operations have been intensified, with around 15–16 persons arrested and produced in court in connection with theft cases over the past 15 days.

With Durga Puja approaching, police said surveillance and preventive operations will be further strengthened across the city to curb theft, snatching and other petty crimes during the festive season.
