Agartala, 7th July 2025: A special court at Dharmanagar today sentenced a youth to three years in prison under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The verdict was delivered by Judge Angshuman Debbarma.
According to public prosecutor Sudarshan Sharma, the accused Sandip Das of Brajendranagar under Kadamtala police station was charged by local resident Niranjan Das for sexually abusing his minor daughter. The complaint led Kadamtala police to register a case number 2023/4, following which an investigation and trial ensued.
Based on the testimonies of ten witnesses, the court convicted Sandip Das under Section 6 r/w Section 24(8) of the POCSO Act. He was sentenced to: 3 years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5,000 under POCSO provisions (with an additional 6 months if the fine is unpaid); 1 year in jail with a Rs 1,000 fine under Section 354 IPC (with an extra month for non-payment); and 6 months’ imprisonment with a Rs 5,000 fine under Section 506 IPC (with a month’s additional jail time in case of non-payment).
Case details reveal that Sandip Das allegedly lured the schoolgirl to a school canteen, where he behaved inappropriately, touched her inappropriately, recorded the act on video, and circulated it on social media. The victim’s father subsequently lodged the FIR.
Following the sentencing, speculation swirled around the court premises regarding whether Sandip Das would be granted bail. Shortly afterward, bail was reportedly granted. The convict’s family has indicated their intention to challenge the verdict in a higher court.
