Agartala, 25th May 2025:  A youth accused of stealing a goat was allegedly tied to a tree and thrashed by a group of locals in the Sonamura Hospital Road area on Sunday afternoon leading to heightened tension in the community.

According to eyewitnesses, frustration had been mounting in the area over recurring incidents of theft and drug-related crimes. “Many young people here have fallen into addiction, and to fund their habits, they resort to stealing. “Even when handed over to the police, they return to the same activities within days,” said a local resident on condition of anonymity.

The accused youth was reportedly caught red-handed in the Sonamura Old Cinema Hall area while attempting to steal a goat. Infuriated by repeated incidents, residents took matters into their own hands. “We couldn’t take it anymore. The police weren’t acting fast enough, so people decided to teach him a lesson,” said another local.

Footage of the attack circulated widely on social media, further fueling public debate about vigilantism and law enforcement. Officials confirmed that action has been taken against individuals responsible for the assault. “Taking the law into one’s own hands is unacceptable. Those involved will be held accountable for their actions,” stated a police official.

Authorities have urged residents to report crimes to the police rather than resorting to violence. Meanwhile, concerns continue to grow over drug-related offenses and their impact on the community.
