Amid wet weather forcast, Kashmir witnesses another freezing night

Date:

A day after the mercury took a deep dive, the Kashmir valley witnessed another freezing night on Saturday.

Kashmir had witnessed extreme drop of temperature on Friday night with some towns recording the coldest night in the past 16 years.

The Meteorological centre at Srinagar said the minimum temperature across the Kashmir valley stayed several degrees below the freezing point on Saturday. The minimum temperatures is likely to improve as another Western Disturbance is approaching J&K from today.

The famous skiing destination Gulmarg resort in north Kashmir remained the coldest place in the Valley with mercury falling to a low of -10.6°C.

The drop in night temperatures varied from place to place overnight and ranged from -1.7°C in Srinagar city in central Kashmir to -10.6°C in Gulmarg.

Srinagar witnessed a bright sunny day on Friday.

The minimum temperature in the southern gateway town of Qazigund in south Kashmir was recorded at -5.4°C, while the frontier Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of -2.4°C.

The drop in night temperature has come even as the 40-day long winter’s coldest period ended in the region earlier this week.

The MeT said that Friday will witness generally cloudy weather with possibility of light snow at isolated higher reaches towards evening.

There is a possibility of light to moderate snow or rain at most places towards on Sunday with chances of heavy snowfall over isolated higher reaches of South Kashmir and adjoining areas and gradual improvement thereafter, the MeT said.

It also predicted that plains of Jammu may receive light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning.

The weather is likely to improve from February 6.
